In Place of Another is a book of photographs by Jane Tuckerman that explores our cultural relationship to “surrogates”. We are programed from childhood to embrace the doll or the transformer as our friend, confidant and teacher. As we mature we incorporate new icons into our lives. Street performances parade puppets and often terrifying masked creatures to create theatrical renditions of allegory and parody. Mannequins and the ventriloquist dummy spout truths that we are unwilling to acknowledge directly. Then, there are all the talismans, and precious personal objects which are collected to ease our primal fears and protect us from unknown devils. We talk to them, fondle them, ask them for answers and wait for replies. From Mickey Mouse, to Tokidoki, to our relationship with a higher power, we view them as friends who are often silent, but give us answers, hope, comfort and luck that we need and want.
“In Place of Another” was the winner of “Best Art Book” at the London Book Festival and awarded first prize at The New England Book Show for “Excellence in Graphic Arts”.
